Galesburg continues laundry list of road work

Several projects are either underway, nearing completion or about to start on Galesburg roadways and lots.

City Engineer Wayne Carl says work is starting on Seminary Street between Fremont and Walsh. He tells Galesburg’s Evening News on WGIL the three-lane road will be reduced to two lanes starting in the first week of April.

“There will be some days, I’m sure, that we’ve got two of the lanes closed down,” he says, “so we’ll only have one lane of traffic and we’ll have flaggers during that time during the day, but then at night it’ll be open to two lanes of traffic. I’m hoping, for the most part, we can keep two lanes of traffic going most of the job.”

That stretch of Seminary will see two-foot extensions on either side along with new curbs and driveway approaches. Depending on weather, Carl says he hopes the project will take about three months.

That work will eventually stretch to the Bickerdyke Bridge.

Other projects include resurfacing Fremont Street from Seminary to the underpass near Farnham Street, brick reconstruction on Pleasant Avenue from Main to North and final touches to Parking Lot D.

In time, Carl says contractors will get to work on the East Main Street underpass. He says bids should go out for that in June with work beginning in August.

The underpass will take about two years to complete. Carl adds that he does not expect Main Street to be closed for construction this year.
