Knox County gets $100,000 estimate to make courthouse exterior repairs

The Knox County Board has committed themselves to finishing off courthouse repairs and the last piece of the exterior work is expected to cost around $100,000.

Cody Basham, the board’s architectural consultant from Klinger and Associates, gave the building committee the estimate last night to fix entrance steps, reapply window sealant and tuck point masonry.

He says the courthouse has about 3,700 lineal feet of window sealant to be replaced and 2,500 square feet of masonry.

Each of those jobs he thinks will run a price of $10,000.

Adding that to the $71,000 estimate for the courthouse steps, and including 10 percent for contingency, $100,000 is what he thinks the county will need to spend.

Basham says he’s interested in maintaining the “historical character” of the building.

“We’re going to get the concrete stained so it will match the granite,”Basham says. “What we’ll do, is we’ll call for a mock up and then we’ll have the granite next to it and that way we can see as close as possible what we can get.”

Klinger and Associates will draw up bid documents and Basham says they should be ready for letting in a couple weeks.

Building Committee co-chair Greg “Chops” Bacon hopes to have estimates next month for costs associated with building a new road to the Knox County Nursing Home.

He says first they need to meet with Love’s Travel Stop representatives to figure out issues with property lines.
