Galesburg Council to vote on lead service line removal tonight

Galesburg City Council will meet tonight and are expected to vote on an engineering agreement for the removal of lead service lines.

Earlier this year, the city applied for a $4 million forgivable loan through the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency which has now been accepted.

Galesburg and Knox County came under scrutiny for high lead levels found in children. National and International media outlets have pointed to lead lines as the culprit, while the county health department contests the problem is entrenched in lead paint and dust in older homes.

According to council documents, the engineering agreement with Bruner, Cooper and Zuck Inc. would not exceed $49,000 in city money.

The funds would come from Water Division dollars and could be partially forgiven in the future. The agreement and loan would allow the city to replace between 1,500 to 2,000 lines.
