Hammond, Bustos and Swanson leading in fundraising heading into November

Candidates seeking office for local races will press for votes right up until November 8, but some are pulling ahead in the money race.
In the race for the 74th State Representative seat, being vacated by Don Moffitt, Republican Dan Swanson has far outraised his Democratic opponent Bill Butts.

Contributions tracked by WGIL show Swanson has raised $56,141 since the beginning of 2016 his biggest contributions coming from Ag research company Calmer Corn Heads.

Butts in the same period raised a little under $10,000 with his biggest donor, Illinois Education Association PAC giving $5,000.

The 93rd district race is where the big money comes in, Republican incumbent Norine Hammond has raised $286,585 in 2016 compared to Democrat John Curtis’ $127,571.

According to the Illinois State Board of Elections, about $63,000 of Hammond’s contributions are in-kind donations from the House Republican Organization.

Curtis’ biggest donation by far is $25,000 AFSCME, the state’s largest public sector union.

Meanwhile in the race for the U.S. House 17th District, Democratic incumbent Cheri Bustos raised about $764,000 to GOP challenger Patrick Harlan’s reported $5,195 but those are only for the first two quarters of fundraising, which run up to June 30.

The congressional totals come from the Federal Election Commission.
