Galesburg Christian School sees swift growth

Galesburg Christian School’s enrollment is rapidly growing.GCS Administrator Bob Nutzhorn says students are coming because of the small class sizes and faith-based curriculum but also admits the instability in Illinois government has likely helped.

Their enrollment has doubled since the beginning of the 2014 school year to 140 students.

Particularly surprising he says is the growth in the junior high grades although all grades including high school have seen growth too.

Nutzhorn says a lot of parents and students who attend other local private schools with out high schools, say they came to GCS to stay in a private school.

“They’re looking for more of that one-on-one attention and faith-based,” Nutzhorn says. “If that’s what you’re looking for we’re the answer in Knox County. We’re it. We’re the only private high school in Knox County. It really does give us an edge on things and as our program builds and grows its really going to help out a lot.”

Over the summer GCS consolidated their two campuses so now pre-school through high school all meet at 1881 E. Fremont St.

A used modular building with four classrooms, each with it’s own restroom was just added that houses pre-school and kindergarten.

When Nutzhorn stepped into his role at GCS, he figured that a town of Galesburg’s size could support about 150 students but he says he’s since changed his opinion.
