Legendary Glenn Miller Orchestra hitting Orpheum in April

The Orpheum Theatre announced Friday that the legendary big band, The Glenn Miller Orchestra, will play the theatre in April.

Glenn Miller was one of America’s most successful dance bandleaders in the Swing Era of the 1930s and ’40s, and nearly 80 years after Miller’s disappearance the band is going strong.

Miller enjoyed four years as America’s best selling recording artist, in the early years of World War II.

He broke up his band in 1942 at the height of its popularity to volunteer for the Army.

He was traveling to entertain U.S. troops in France when Miller’s aircraft disappeared in bad weather over the English Channel.

The present Glenn Miller Orchestra was formed with increased demand that was driven by the film “The Glenn Miller Story” starring Jimmy Stewart, released in 1954.

Miller has three recordings recognized the Grammy Hall of Fame; Moonlight Serenade, Chattanooga Choo Choo and In the Mood.

Today, the 18 member ensemble continues to play many of the original Miller arrangements both from the civilian band and the AAFB libraries.

They also play more modern selections arranged and performed in the Miller style and sound.

Tickets are on sale now by visiting or calling The Orpheum Theatre box office or visit www.galesburgorpheum.org/tickets.
