GHS plans first virtual graduation ceremony

District 205 has made plans for a virtual graduation ceremony celebrating the Class of 2020.

205 Superintendent John Asplund says next weekend seniors will come to the GHS fieldhouse, walk across the stage and get their picture taken just as if it was a normal ceremony.

Graduates can bring up to three people with them when they go to receive their diploma.

Each students’ recognition will be taped, edited and a video of the pieced together ceremony will be released around June 1.

Speeches will also be delivered by students and a staff member, which will be recorded and included in the video.

Asplund says the fieldhouse better allows for social distancing than the auditorium which has traditionally been used for graduation.

Pictures will also be taken of the seniors getting their diplomas, the same as would happen in a normal ceremony.

Some parents have expressed anger that GHS isn’t going ahead with a normal in-person ceremony.

Asplund says 205’s insurance company says they will not provide protection if someone were to get ill and sue the district.
