Former United golf coach pleads to domestic battery in sex abuse case

23-year-old William Carnes, who was briefly a golf coach at United High School, accepted a plea deal last week to lesser charges in his criminal sex abuse case.
Carnes was facing charges of aggravated criminal sex abuse and indecent solicitation of a child in Warren County, which could have landed him a prison sentence of up to 7 years.

State’s Attorney Andrew Doyle says the unnamed victim, 14-years-old at the time, has approved the plea, along with their family.

Carnes pleaded to domestic battery in exchange for three felony counts against him being dropped.

He will serve two years probation and have to register with the murderer and violent offender against youth registry for 10 years, similar to a sex offender registry.

Carnes is also ordered to have no contact with the victim.

Police reports from January say that Carnes coerced the juvenile into performing a sex act in his dorm room at Bowers Hall.

Carnes was a student at Monmouth College at the time of the incident, alleged to have taken place in April 2019.
