Downtown Council installs billboard to promote East Main underpass

The East Main Street Underpass, the third and final piece of the $88 million project that built the Don Moffitt Overpass and Bickerdyke Bridge should be completed in the Spring of 2017.
The Galesburg Downtown Council and Galesburg Fire Department have come to together to install a billboard, that shows a rendering of what the the underpass will look when completed.

Downtown Council Board Member, Bob Bondi tells WGIL that residents should be excited for the new underpass, even if for a while they’re inconvenienced.

“A lot of activity is going to be happening that’s going to make it difficult to come in and out of the downtown and we wanted the public to really have an understanding of what it’s all going to look like when it’s completed.”

Bondi says dirt should start moving on construction this spring with the final product being ready in Spring 2017.

The Downtown Council wanted to put the billboard up to give residents vision of what they’re inconvenience is getting them, something they might not have had a clear understanding of with past projects.

“A lot of people were kind of grumbling and when the final product was done everyone was just thrilled with what had happened. And the communication of what was going to happen wasn’t out to as many people as we hoped it would be.”

The billboard is placed just at the point heading into downtown where traffic will be diverged by construction.
