Asplund discusses financial future of District 205 amidst pandemic

District 205 is looking into some broad recommendations for moving forward into the next school year.

At last night’s school board meeting, Superintendent Dr. John Asplund discussed the district’s budgetary future, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

He says that the district is seeking guidance from their attorneys and the State regarding any ramifications with the CARES Act if the district is forced to furlough employees going into the next school year with an ongoing pandemic.

“We have not spent a lot of time talking about the financial ramifications of this whole thing yet but I think we need to start doing that pretty soon,” Asplund told board members. “The federal government can’t just continue to print money and we all know the State doesn’t have money.”

Dr. Asplund said he believes that next fall, the district could be migrating between different stages of being open: Students being in class, learning from home, or a modified attendance of some kind.

He said that there could be a situation next fall where the district doesn’t need all of the employees that the district has employed.

Asplund said the district is trying to get some direction so that they can, “try to move forward in a rational manner because we’re all still in this unknown nebulous time but we can’t stay in it forever.”
