Pair of guns found by residents in unusual places within two days

Two separate incidents of Galesburg residents finding firearms in less than obvious places have been reported by Galesburg police this week.
Tuesday, a man told police he was cleaning up the shoreline of Lake Storey in a kayak.

He was just southwest of the west boat ramp when he found what officers refer to as an inoperable “old rusty revolver pistol” about a foot below the water line.

GPD took the gun as evidence to be destroyed.

Then two days later on the 200 block of Garfield a man noticed a “black and brown long gun case” under the tree of a neighboring residence.

Officers found in the case a Mossberg 12 gauge pump action shotgun.

They noted that the case was wet with mold in it.

Police disposed of the case and ran the shotgun through their records, finding no match to reports of stolen weapons in the last six months.
