A day which President Franklin Roosevelt marked as a “day which will live in infamy” was 75 years ago as of this Wednesday.
The Japanese attack on the Pearl Harbor naval base precipitated the American entrance into World War II and can be considered a day which altered the course of American history.
Jane Easterly is the Galesburg Public Library’s Assistant Director, who is organizing a remembrance event in tandem with the VFW.
Easterly says it seems that as time goes on that younger generations are less familiar with the infamous attack on the U.S. Naval base.
“It’s the 75th anniversary and many of our WWII vets are dying as they reach that age,” Easterly says. “So, it seemed important to recognize and talk about and remember that event, this year.”
Carl Sandburg College history instructor Fred Visel will open the event with a short presentation.
After the presentation cake and coffee will be served.
Those who were alive and have memories of the attack will be asked at this time to share their stories. The library would like to videotape these memories for future generations.
It runs from 2 to 4 p.m. on Wednesday Dec. 7 at the Galesburg Public Library.
As nearly all Galesburg Public Library events are, this event is free and open to members of the public.
