A new farmer’s market location is coming to Galesburg to make it easier for residents to purchase locally grown, fresh produce.
The Farmer’s Market authorized through the federally funded Women, Children and Infant or WIC supplemental nutrition program will be five days a week at the Knox County Health Center.
Market shoppers can use WIC coupons to purchase goods from one of the four authorized sellers but cash is also accepted and the general public is welcome.
Director of Family Health Catherine Ayres says this new market is designed to make it easier for family’s to access affordable, healthy food.
“Supermarkets are full of sugar and carbohydrates and really they don’t over emphasize the real quality nutrition like your fruits and vegetables and sometimes those cost more,” Ayres says.
She goes on to say that having the market open five days a week is the goal but that will depend on turnout in the future.
The first day for the Health Center’s Farmer’s Market will be Monday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will run through the summer months.
Director of Public Health Erin Olson says that some of the vendors at the new market already sell at the the downtown Farmer’s Market and do accept WIC coupons there.
